I had a quick look over lunch and did a few answers but haven't worked out the 30 thing yet (group of brass monkeys lacking vitality (4)). The only answer which sprang to mind after this morning's fiasco had 5 letters...

It is a bit confusing...I had a perfectly plausible answer for 21D(8) before I realised 21D is (1,4,3)

Luckily I got that right - assuming it could also be written as an (8) - but with all these revisions I think there should be a re-start!

All done, but I can't see how 22dn/22ac works. Can anyone explain, without giving the game away yet on the theme?

Still trying to parse it Peterm, a cleverer puzzle than I realised at first.

Not sure of my parsing at 9A...is it an anag(or container of)of "a hand" and small thing often described as free?
