Pipesmoker: In the US we call them air quotes, and they're usually used by airheads.

I just came in from weeding my garden. A woodchuck has been eating my chard!!!!! My exquisite, heavily savoyed argentata!!!!!!! The varmint has dug a tunnel system that looks as if it required massive federal funding, and it CANNOT BE OUTSMARTED!!!!!!! And it looks like a %$&^^!@ linebacker!!!!!

Thank you for your sympathy, one and all. Perhaps I should explain the word scunner for those who are not Scottish. A scunner is that which gives one the boke.

You have revealed all to me,regarding the people who use two fingers to indicate quotation marks.
I had always taken offence,thinking they were indicating some other meaning to me.Rather rude (I believe).

I fear you may have been correct in your assumption. The inverted commas are done with (sort of) inverted fingers. Those with upright digits, are expressing an opinion. A suitable response is to finger one's nose or stick one's tongue out, blowing a raspberry if the occasion demands.
