7d is a word similar in meaning & spelling to trellis
20a a 3 letter word for bean inside a word for rope (with the yard ending missing) Defn is clumsy dolt
21a Your "ma" has replaced "di" so think of a suitable author ??DIKE
20a and 21d were my last 2 too!

Ixion - I use the Chambers online word wizard for missing xword answers, then look up the defn in Chambers dictionary (book) or google the defn.

I don't(bonkers I know)have a Chambers - googling 21d(with and without hyphen)gives nothing sensible - I presume it's in Chambers under "up"?

Yes up with your other 4 letters - defn is as follows:
the action or mode of making up; constitution (esp mental or moral): galley proofs arranged in page form.
If/when I win a Chambers you can have my old one!!
