Generally quite a good one from Peter Chamberlain this week, but I also had trouble with this corner. The third letter of 25D is also the second letter of 30A.

25D A smile that's crooked (4) A???

30A Man fifth centre half in the lead (4) ???O

There as two possible answers for 25D; AWRY as stated above or AGEE. The first gives ?R?O and the second gives ?E?O for 30A. Possible answers are ARLO, HERO or NERO, none of which really fit the clue.

Any further ideas?

Also stuck on this one:

32A Free place at a football match perhaps (5,4) N?P?Y ?E?T

It could be NAPPY SEAT or perhaps NIPPY SEAT, but not being a football fan I have no idea.

Hi Mandala. I think 32A is "empty seat" if 16D is "reflective". So,30A could be Slav or Olav ! Although that doesn't help with 25D (agly, perhaps ?) ! Cheers. George (from Edinburgh)

Thanks George. I had REFLECTION for 16D, but REFLECTIVE is better. So now I have either ?E?V or ?R?V. The former could be DERV or PERV but nothing fits with the latter. For those who don't have the crossword 16D is:

Mood of one in front of a mirror? (10)

How have people read "Man fifth centre half in the lead"?

Is the answer "Man", in whatever sense (a name or a synonym)?

Does "fifth centre" indicate the letter F in the centre of "fifth"?

Or the fifth letter in "centre" - R?

And does "half in the lead" mean that H is the first letter of the answer?

Thanks again Mandala and also Sammy. 30A is definitely "trev" . Half of centre is tre in the lead + V for fifth = TREV !and 25D must be "awry"
