Most likely place plainly to encounter a drover? (2,3,5)
ON THE _ R _ I _ Is it just TRAIL?

It's brandished pointedly by a Texas Ranger (4) It looks like STAR
_ _ _ R but that would give T as the first letter of the following clue.
Is this what we do with a few.....like one over the eight? (3,2)
_ _ E _ N

I think "tie on" (as in "tie one on") is more likely.

Thank you both, Redford and Finlay. I even thought of "Lie in" meaning having to stay in bed due to being hung over - one over the eight.

Truthfully, it could be anything in this notoriously flawed crossword. This week's classic misspelling is an anagram of "RTE spots re" giving the answer for dissidents as "protestErs" .

Last week attributed the song "Downtown" to Dusty Springfield instead of Petula Clark.
