Crypto, thank you so much. I will not embarrass myself further by seeking an explanation - I'm off to find the dictionary.

In case your dictionary let's you down Tonta it's 'lay a bet' and non-professional + amateur e.g lay preacher.

Sorry + amateur should say = amateur

Honestly, Crypto, hard as it may be to believe that I have a brain at all, I did get the "lay a bet" bit, but I did not make the connection between "lay" and "amateur".
