I have E?Y - it looks like ELY but why?????

Any ideas?

L (learner driver) in ye (the back)

I put Ely. I sort of explain it like this:

The = Ye, back = Ey, with L (Learner driver) in = Ely (city).

That's great! - I am not devious enough to sort this compiler's clues out and I end up every week putting answers in which must be right but I don't know why!!
