Neither my wife nor I can see the cryptic explanation for two clues from a Times crossword book. Help please:

1. Clue: "Leader of criminals, given time, finally pout behind bars:

Solution: "Encaged"

2. Clue: "Upset as before after this is mislaid".

Solution: "Theresa"

The solutions are correct, we would just like to understand why!!!

Sorry, two typos in my original message:

In 1, "pout" should read "put"

In 2, most critical word ommitted! Should read: "Girl upset as before after this is misdlaid"

Shouldn't the first be "put behind bars"? leader of criminals - c. time - age. finally - end.

AJT, Many thanks for both responses.

In the case of 1. what is there to say that the "c age" goes inside "end"?

It doesn't really give it very well, does it? Leader of criminals - c, given time and finally - age and end. More like a clumsy anagram, or perhaps I'm missing something.
