Looks like it IS banger. An old banger = an old crate = an old car. & case = crate (packing.

Must have 4d wrong. Clue is "17 later: a crowd?" 17 is "Glamis" and I have COWARD for 4d (anagram of a crowd) because Lady Macbeth called Glamis a coward to rouse him into committing murder of Duncan.
