Thanks Jim...I already have helter skelter for another clue which was my immediate thought.Still trying to think of something else which fits dashes.

Thanks again EMF...I am inclined to swings as it seems to fit the "about" bit of the clue. Darts is a synonym of dash but I cannot see how the "about" links in. Altogether an irritating clue!
