Hi,
I got 'crackle' too, by the same route. Not sure why 'cackle' is 'crow' though? Boast=cackle? Bit of a leap? And the only connection between 'hiss' and 'crackle' I can think of is the superfluous noise on vinyl records? Maybe I'm missing something.

Cackle and crow are synonymous. See, for example:
http://thesaurus.com/browse/cackle
This isn't really clear in Chambers, but I don't think it or any other dictionary is the standard reference for the Eye crossword.

I wasn't so concerned about that bit; more the crackle/hiss part.
