Could someone offer a clue to finding the answer to this elusive question which I have been trying to find for 4 weeks!

Alter one letter of the "Fat Owl of the Remove's surname (Bunter) and you arrive at the surname of "George" who played an architect in a radio series of the 1940's. Which well known film actor of the day was "George"?
