I have got to the end, but am a bit unsure of 2 answers, so if anypone can confirm or otherwise if I am right I would be very grateful. 57ac What could make copper boared and wanting to retire. I have dead-beat. The other one is 51dn Tried hard, having brought out spades - what might be buried? I have Those, but I'm not too sure of that one.

Sallyw. Could you PLEASE give a little more detail. Clue number, letters gained., etc. See ULF's thread. Actually, I've 'seen' you here many times, so you should know better.

Thank you Ixion and Iain. I feel really stupid for not getting that one! And to the Judge, I was aiming the question to anybody who had finished that particular crossword, although to be fair I should have been more specific. Thanks to you all anyway!

re dead-beat - i think a policeman(copper)on the beat would get bored if there was nothing happening(things are a bit dead)and someone who is dead-beat wants to go to bed(retire).

Very true Trevor, but sometimes the answer is too obvious then you start to doubt it.

Sallyw, I should ignore The Judge and his ilk. Very mannerless people. Good luck with your future puzzles.

Thank you Martha. It certainly wasn't my intention to annoy anyone. And thank you Trevor!
