Thanks for that suggestion, emf. I am well and truly stuck with this one.

Here is where I got the possible initial P:

Jack's first course is difficult(6).

I think it is UPHILL. (Jack and Jill) And if so, that's the P.
It might be wrong, though.

I've just had a wildly different thought:
DWEEB. American for bookish, nerdy, studious.

That would put out the P and hence UPHILL. Drat!
