Phew - what a struggle this has been! I'm down to this one:-
33 Down - "See classical quartet that is more brilliant than the others"
It's 8 letters and I have V-V-D-S-. Must be VIVID something or other, but I don't know of a word to fit.

It must be VIVIDEST. Ugly word. V (see) IV (quartet) ID EST (that is). Rest is definition

Thanks, Quisling! It looks as if the setter backed themselves into a corner and had to include this unusual word.

I’ve heard that situation (backing yourself into a corner) described as “grid crunch” which I rather like.

I actually enjoyed the challenge!

I agree that "vividest" is a bit clunky, but it is a perfectly valid superlative. "most vivid" is prettier.
