Obviously BACKER and ORAL but if so why? and if not, then what?

It did occur to me to wonder whether 1 dn was in fact BICKER not BACKER. Both 'supporter' and 'row' could be the identifier with the words in between the cryptic bit. Is the first word always the answer?
