Another vote of thanks to Gaston. The penny dropped from a great height and the end result was very satisfying.

Lovely puzzle, but I’m stumped on two. I haven’t got the full message, but I know what the endgame requires.

10a Dropping wager grape is missing (4) RA?N

35d Puts note in twice (5) P?TES

There maybe a single letter correction needed in the clues.

10a - 6 letter "grape" minus "is" - definition is "dropping wager" after misprint correction in second word

35d - 3 letter "twice" around 2 letter "note" - definition is "puts" after misprint correction

I've just noticed your first letter is wrong in 35d - you've probably already got it now but just in case I thought it should mention it

Very enjoyable puzzle. I have the answer but am stuck on 33a house doctor on important day in may. Any strong hints would be appreciated.

Change house appropriately and think about wartime dates. I too need help. All complete but shaded area appears random and I was expecting a pattern. Have I of some of my 8 wrong?? Those who like coloured pencils may care to reply!! Connie
