Quite a chore (for me, at least) getting to the finish - but the suspense kept up right to the end. An ingenious puzzle.

I have a filled grid and I think there are 11 2x2 units to be "crossed out", by which I assume I am meant to do a nice neat big X in the 2x2 cell. And that's where I'm stuck. Close examination of all uncrossed-out cells reveals no sign of a game of any kind. Is 11 correct?

14 to be crossed out.
There are 3 names for the game in the grid (as the preamble states) horizontal, vertical and diagonal - only one is 'completed' in the game.

And the 3 names in the grid can include crossed-out cells

If 55 appears in the grid (as the sum of the 4 letters in any 2x2) then you would cross out that 2x2 block.

You'll find 55 in one of the 2x2 sections of the grid (the section just above the bottom left corner section) where the 4 letters add up to 55.
