Harrhy, I thought furze but cant see why. Could you explain please.

1st one looks like timpani. tim + pani(c).

furze is a plant species. furze sounds like firs.

This is where I appear to have messed up.

I thought timpani but I got the first letters of the first two clues from GNUS. The clue was GUNS TURNED ON ANIMAL. IF that is correct it cant be timpani.

Grateful for your thoughts.

guns (gats) turned on (stag) animals. a gat is some sort of home made gun used by kid gangs in usa.

Yes, I think so. ge(ne)t. Mind you a genet is not the first animal you would come up with for a carnivorous one.

You do wonder where they get some of these words from :-)
