Got the answer to 4d but can't quite work out how all the parts of the clue generate it.

Problem solved! A 'reed' is a 'marginal' plant. Aha!

I downloaded the puzzle this morning and have a full grid now, but I'm unsure about 12ac, 'Balls up, plump and beginning to smell' (6). I've got ?L?F?S. I've entered FLUFFS, but if it is that, I don't understand the wordplay. Can anyone help?

Hi Nesbitt.

If fluffs is the answer then, as ('fluffs' ≅ 'balls up'), the make-up could be 'fluff' ≅ 'plump' + 's'mell. Cushions can be 'plumped up' or 'fluffed up', yes, maybe?

Hi JimC

Yes, I'd thought of that. But it's all a bit tenuous, isn't it? I'm going to bung it in as it stands, anyway.
