If it's 'purloin' how does pur = fresh cut?

I think it’s PUR/e .. ‘fresh’ cutting the last letter

Thanks Jono, no doubt you're right but it's not a good synonym, something can be pure without being fresh, or fresh without being pure.

13a Insect’s leg in pain with dart (9)
This is looking like ‘dragonfly’ but I can’t parse it - I can see ‘agony’ in there but then can’t work out the other letters.

Leg is ‘on’ in the cricket sense, pain is ‘drag’ and dart is ‘fly’.

…I also saw ‘agony’ and once you’ve seen it it’s very difficult to unsee it!

Thanks again, I’m enjoying this a lot more than some recent horrors but I do wish that setters would leave off the cricket terms, lots of us have never played or watched it.
