24d I’m sure you are correct. The reference, I think, is to the character Nina, a dressmaker, in The Flight from the Enchanter by Iris Murdoch.

I didn’t know the other one, but with a bit a searching I think it refers to the 1960s novel by Jack Kerouac “Big Sur” and a character called Jarry Wagner…
