A short puzzle for a quiet Tuesday morning…

LITOTES by Jay

Each clue contains a word which must be removed and inserted into the following clue (directly replacing the word removed from that clue) before solving. To complete the cycle, a word removed from clue 8 should be inserted into clue 1. The initial letters of the displaced words (in order, once correctly positioned) connect all solutions to a specific work and in a roundabout way to the title of the puzzle.

1. Recall May vacation touring capital of Italy in he’s (6)
2. Crazy chap - arrangement writhing with rage when anagrammed! (6)
3. Crane’s-bill measuring takes pages (8)
4. Space between two shows of shoddy journalism? (6)
5. Tramp’s telecast odd the way (10)
6. Dead dark hearing aid (4)
7. Another thing after turning yatagan at this time (8)
8. Retirement perhaps finally twisted here! (5)

Interpretation of one word from the clues relies on its Wikipedia entry rather than Chambers.

Good luck!

Thanks jono
I thought I would take a shortcut by finding 8 letter synonyms for "litotes", but there are lots!
I can see the answer for 3, so that gives me a handle, but I can't quite see what to move from 2 in order to get it.

Excellent stuff, Jono, and a new work to me, I'm ashamed to say. BTW, I think 3 should be (9).

And thanks for the credit for "midshipman". Really no need, I'm always happy to be the oily rag to your mechanic, as an old Fleet Street sub mate of mine used to say!

Thanks, Quisling!
(9) was not my intention. “Take S”?
So the solution is just as it appears the work…

Ahhh, I see. Actually both (8) and (9) appear in the work, which is why I didn't look any further. Mea culpa
