Quite a good week for the Big 3, I think, with an excellent Listener and IQ and now a lovely tribute for EV 1600. I don't recall seeing this method of generating extra letters before, so that was fun. Of course the theme was no surprise, but it was nicely executed using real words at every step.

Here's to 1600 more!

I agree. Staggeringly good setting from ProXimal. The novel mechanism for producing the extra letters made for a challenging and satisfying solve; but to produce 43 clues of such quality using that device, always having real words was a tour de force.

Yes, I agree - this one is top quality (the other two are variously flawed, I think).

The initial answer to 37a - 'Battery was on that floor of French club covered in goop' (7, two words) - should lose a g. Where does the reinstated s appear in the clue ? I have completed the puzzle but that issue is somewhat spoiling my enjoyment and appreciation of it.

The same applies to my efforts to trace those pesky four of the 11 cells to be highlighted in the Listener, incidentally, so what with yesterday's washout at OT it's been a bit of a frustrating weekend!

I spent much of last night trying to figure out where the missing letter could possibly go. It was compounded by me not even checking the actual word - why would I when I was so sure it was provided the single letter abbreviation! - thankfully the penny eventually dropped so I was able to get some sleep:-)
