Good morning all - how goes the "plucking". I am working backwards, having already got the "plucked" clues first. Now to check the missing definition letters. Not much grid left to fill at this stage.

Would you say you're very clever pluckers?

Filling in the wrong clue for 19d has delayed me somewhat, so in answer to your question The Judge, certainly not!!
All finished now!

My grid is complete except for last letter of 21d - I don't understand the wordplay so not sure if it's "Y" or"E"
Help someone please.

JRS - it's "Y" - be = occu(R) pacy = smart with N (new) inside giving definition possession

Not that it matters, but I can't see where the 2nd letter of the 2nd word (letters that are missing in definitions) comes from. Must be between 18d and 33d but I can't work it out.
Anyone know?

Hello Sudokulover - I haven't got that either - feel it must be to do with 29d as I'm ot happy with the wordplay there - trap, yes, but excellent.

I'm still left with 40ac. The letters I have mean nothing, but I can't see that I've gone wrong with the crossing clues.

IAGO was an 'ancient' (ensign) in Othello. Cunning!

22d is an anagram of inthecan, minus h. Broadcat is to indicate an anagram
