I am stuck with the lower left corner - assistance with 18d and 18ac would help me progress.

To help you we need the clues and number counts plus any letters you already have.

LWP, could you please read the Posting Guidelines which I think will help you, they gives advice on how to ask your question so that other Forum members are able to help you.

Not everybody has the relevant paper in front of them so obviously they need to know the clues etc.

Since I do have the crossword, I can help. 18d definition is “One might check”. German car + 3 letter “decay” reversed. 18a is an &lit clue - the whole thing is both definition and wordplay. It may help you crack it if you add an implied “than you” after “better”.

For what it’s worth, the answer to 18a includes an “X”, although it’s not needed in the clue.
