Just to say this was an excellent puzzle by Fieldfare.

Agreed. The title was a nice nudge in the right direction and I could remember most of the unclued answers, one of whom shares my surname.

Yes, I enjoyed this one. I recognised a couple of the "unclueds" thanks to having read many books on the subject and that's when the meaning behind the title became clear.

The 14a in my ancestry was not so famous, but was awarded a Bronze Medal by the Royal Humane Socoety as a schoolboy, for saving a boy's life .

They're pairs of surnames - an across paired with a down each time. Two very famous surnames precede them - that was the 11th in the series.
