The F1 reference had me stumped. I think the clue would be better without “on” though

Just noticed this, chrise@1. Thanks. Quite specialist for a general cryptic, needing to know chess notation and the starting squares for pieces. I have added it to a thread I started in November 2020 on the English Chess Forum entitled 'Times Cryptic Chess Clues', though other newspapers have provided examples too.

I started the thread with a clue which I also thought quite specialist, though Chambers does have the definition.

Good one. That solution also appeared in the recent (royalty themed?), Guardian Saturday Prize Crossword 28,859 by Picaroon.

Which reminds me of another Guardian clue from the prize quite recently on 10th September …
