Well if caravaggio won't start it I guess I'll have to. Reasonably easy this week with a couple of really simple ones (10A & 15A), but one duffer. I really don't like the TV personality clues and to find two this week was a downer, especially since 12A was a poor clue.

Wittiest clue:

9D Exert discipline on drunken sailors? (3,1,5,4)

Well, John, if 15a is easy - then I'm thick!!
Robert, re 12a think of a long distance runner - going back a few decades or so! Also another word for encourage for the surname.
But, I agree with you both on personality clues - if you don't follow much tv or radio, one's reduced to trolling through the RT listings - at least that's what I do!!
Managed to complete 3/4s in half an hour, but struggling with the last few - will perservere!

I did leave a comment on the thread for '39' in which I said that I'd finished this puzzle but I wasn't going to start the thread this week...

At first sight, I thought that I was going to have real problems but, once I got started, things fell into place and, for a number of clues, I again saw the answer and then had to determine the construct.

If I have a criticism it's that two of the clues require the chemicals symbols [for uranium and phosphorus] as part of the answer.

I have just realised that the answer to 7across is curio(US)

7a. Think of a synonym for 'keen to know' and then lose the abbreviation 'US'.

21d. This requires the surname of an American television girl detective, whose Christian name is Nancy.

Errrrm. I don't think you "realised" anything. You were given the answer in another thread about ten minutes before you posted here.
