Could 17a be Sherwood Forest?

Thanks both of you - considered both but the down clue giving the "S" is from CharleS Mingus (clue being "us bassist who formed his jazz workshop in 1955")

Ah - just realised he could be known as CHARLIE so Needwood fits after all! Now to find that dratted tree!
