Please help with 1 a - Could this be Lonely Pup? If so why? The clue is Unduly led astray by star for so long

15d is the crimea(anagram).

The Crimea?

I was thinking along the lines of TOODLE PIP (but can't quite see why. I can't see how LONELY PUP fits either) But TOODLE PIP means so long. (Cheerio and all that)

Too = unduly
dle = led, astray
pip = star on uniform's shoulder

It is toodle pip.
unduley = too (too much is unduley).
dle = anagram of led.
pip = star on officer's shoulder badge.
