I've only just started on this MH. We have to look at the setter. The only thing I had thought of for 7ac was pupa - using pup as colt, but I haven't got 10ac yet - as you obviously have. I'm trying to make it an anagram, but no luck so far.

Thanks AJT. I won't spoil it for you, but the last letter is definitely a 'u'!

MH, I'm not asking for help, but your opinion, please.I've been working at this for several hours. Mephisto usually takes me about an hour and a half. Am I being particularly obtuse, or is it this setter's wordplay? I have completed six, I think.

No doubt you have your 7ac by now, MH. I've finally done except for 27ac and 28d. I'm going to leave it for a while.

AJT - Most people in personal ads claim to have 27 Across (which isn't a word as such!)

2d was a wild guess on my part, and the only connection I could find referred to the tart. It's a french expression, but accepted here. 15 d. Imagine a sergeant-major(a kindly one) going in to wake the lads. Come on .....
