Cannot parse 3a:

One female unknown, introduced to acting, drying up (10)

Solution:: HARDBITTEN

'Hen' for female, perhaps and 'bit' (part) for introduced to acting??

Petrodkim, It looks like it should be MUMMIFYING
i F(emale) + Y, unknown, in MUMMING, acting

Many thanks mattrom,
That certainly looks a most convincing solution to the clue.
The only problem is that the software (The Times 1000 Crosswords, Vol.2) only accepts 'hardbitten' as the solution, given that the five corresponding solutions down (all correct) give: ?A?D?I?T?N. for 3 across.
I remain stumped as to the parsing thereof...

Having spent some time researching 'hardbitten' allusions, references and definitions to no avail, I have to conclude that there has been a mistake in the data entry and that the wrong clue has been given for this solution. If so, this would be the first time I have come across such a (frustrating) error.
However, your 'mummyfying' corresponds perfectly to the clue given.
Many thanks, anyway...

Petrodkim, I’m sure you’re correct that the wrong clue has been printed, as Mattrom’s parsing is perfect.

Hardbitten has appeared in the following crosswords, including a couple from the Times. Maybe one of them corresponds to yours, in which case you will see the correct clue.
