A swansong for "Columba", apparently, three years post-retirement.

Very enjoyable, and one of the best "Species" for a while with an excellent theme.

I woke up bright and early and thought I'd give it a try; recognising the name of the novelist fairly early on in my efforts made it a very satisfying "solve".

Agreed. Very well constructed. The novel is one I hadn't heard of but learning something new is, for me, one of the joys of these crosswords.

Nice puzzle but i am unclear how I should 30d the novel's title.

I think you need to 1 across the title rather than 30 down it.
