D?O?S Looks like DROSS for rubbish but can't see the parsing

Any help much appreciated

Cross, military decoration - multiply the C, initially, by five, to get D (Roman numerals).

...C,100, becomes D, 500.

To be honest, I can't for the life of me see that "Legitimate" means "sensible" in any meaning of either word, but your parsing is convincing.
