Joint stake (6) --e-e- ? reefer



The second letter of clue 1 is the first letter of clue 2, so if reefer is correct it would be
-r-u-

How do you get the U - I think the answer is ESSEX

I got the U as follows

I had SUBDUCTION but with your expertise, I think the answer must be SUBVENTION.

Subvention is right - I have sent my crossword in but can remember some of the answers
