There appears to be a misprint in 4 down. I reckon site should read side.
No mention of last week’s shading fiasco in the online version today.

Unclued, I think 'site' is fine - it's part of the definition (along with the next two words.) The middle of the answer is given by the word before 'site'. I'm being circumspect to avoid spoiling this for anyone else!

The shading thing was ... an irritation, but not much more than that for me!

4d. Whilst I agree with Malone's definition (last three words) and I have pretty good idea of the overall answer, the parsing defeats me.

thanks, Peter. There's a four-letter word for 'cabbage', and inside that goes the three-letter word for 'on' (a particular sporting reference, used often).

Mille grazie, Malone. I had missed the sporting reference, and was trying out all manner of weird brassicas.

Glad I could help, Peter284. That sporting reference appears so, so often - I now look for it even when something else is intended!

You're almost there - I(sle) follows FUG for 'stale air', you just need the final letter from the surrounding anagram of 'are' (they are havens for certain kinds of flora - Latin).
