Bleriot does fit - have you put in the theme word rather than its synonym at 16d?

I have all the answers save 46a (Poet's appearance alienating institute/ E?E??O?); I have a handful of the thematic answers too, but can see no thematic connection (nor this pair of clued lights). Any ideas will be welcome.

46 is the name of a poet (remove 'i' from 'appearance'/having emerged).
You're looking for two words side by side giving an 8 letter name (when joined end to end). Then enter synonyms of shortened forms of the name.

Many thanks, drxx, I have now made considerable progress save for:

10a: all letters come from down lights, but no justification yet perceived by me.

14a: I have first three letters from down lights, but not the fourth, nor any justification yet perceived.

10. The first word is a two-letter tree, followed by a two-letter word for 'atop'.

Hi peter284, both unclued entries you refer to are parts of the 2 pairs referred to in the preamble; 10a with 36d and 14a with 34a.
