I'm a bit puzzled here: Appleby isn't a county town and applery isn't a word in Chambers or OED, nor is it recognised by Crossword Solver. Then I tried to find an alternative and all I could do was bedcord for Bedford: well Crossword Solver gives bedcord. Anyway, down to business: 41A, tweaks or twerks ? Have decided to fill it in with a hybrid letter in 4th position, could be A, could be R .... cunning huh ?
Not one of the Speccie's finest puzzles .....
Any thoughts Malone ?

Wasn't Appleby (the amended Applery) the country town of Westmoreland?

Bedford because I was testing how easy it is to find a word one letter away from a county town.
