unclued

I have hit a problem with 36dn. “Frivolous” is fair (5). The obvious answer (to me) is light. However that gives *C*LE*IHL for unclued 42ac. I also have no idea about the unclued lights.
Any help appreciated as usual.

Your letters are fine, Unclued! Several of the unclued entries are slightly more helpful than others - 14 A and 20 D, for example.

It's not necessary to start another thread, there is an existing one. The site administrator has put out a few reminders about this.

Thanks, unclued. I mentioned the Duplicate thread things because Norah, site administrator, finds them a bit frustrating!

Unclued and other Users, I've not deleted this second Spectator thread as there were several answers. However, could I please ask you to spend a few seconds scanning down the first page to check that there isn't already a thread on the crossword in which you are interested.

Malone, it's not just me that likes a clean first page, I think most of our regulars appreciate it too. I started the policy when the first page seemed to be mostly occupied by just two crosswords, very frustrating for everyone.

42a is an alternative spelling for a term of abuse for a clumsy oaf.

I too, am struggling with the theme.

The solution to 42a leads me to Brewer's and a story of a man who sold his shadow, written by an obscure Fence botanist. So- "fade away"?

Any hints will be gratefully received.
