thats what i thought too - down obviously fluff and maybe because London is down South??? very vague

Yes DOWN. I would agree that London is South,certainly from where I am from (Scotland).
However Londoners always say down wherever they are going to,and the clue is "from london"

Chambers also lists DOWN(3) = the roadstead off E Kent. My geography is poor. Could this be a roadstead 'from London'?

In the good old days of British Rail ALL trains travelling away from London were called DOWN trains. ALL trains travelling to London were called UP trains. i.e. Edinburgh to London was UP, London to Edinburgh was DOWN.
