Top marks to anyone who knows all the unclued names. Does anyone else think they are an unfair sting in the tail from Doc?

Bootlebarth, I'm not sure if it was 'unfair' to have us tracking down those names. We recently had cricket captains and train stops in Norway, both of those were were just as much hard work for me!

Can anyone help with unclued 1ac and 5ac? I have researched on Google and cannot find any sensible links to 19, 34 and 39. Also both 23 and 32 can apparently link with 8. The only connection that I am certain about is 43 to 16. Help!!!

23 links to 8 (32 links to 39) 1 to 19 (Spanish b 1907 first name Nicanor) 5 to 34 (English b 1978 first name Alison).

I think Doc's endgames are not much fun - if he stuck with Brewer's lists it would make it easier for those with the book (does that make internet searches like this one fairer?).

Worse, there can be variations. How about Janson for 5ac?

Thanks drxx. The chosen names appear to be random. I can’t describe this endgame as “fun”!

I concur about the engame. My harpist was HOLLIGER, until this thread revealed the harpist's true identity. Now I'm looking for an organ plyer. There's hundreds. This is not the first time a Spectator endgame hasn't been fully thought through.

Turast, The organist is British-New Zealand (or possibly the other way round), a DBE, and she gave the first UK performance of Messiaen's Méditations sur le mystère de la Sainte Trinité at the RFH; I was in the audience.

I'm amused that Doc tells us - as is his way - to ignore one accent when for once, in this particular case, the é transfers nicely from the source material to the anagrammatic answer. (I'm assuming he means 33d.)

Will 37

I was hoping to avoid this, but now I need a countback

I have
1 Across playing the 19 Down (never heard of him)
5 Across playing the 34 Across (only a very vague idea of her)
43 Across playing the 16 Across (very famous because of "School of Rock")
I NOW (thanks to your info) have 31 Down playing the 39 Across. (I had her as a woodwind player at 8 Down)

This means 23 Down must be the blower. ?O?LI?E?

Is that right?

You are correct turast. Your last connection is the musician at 23dn (fairly well known) with 8dn.
