Can anyone explain the parsing for a couple of clues please?

Put in home when retired? (5)

The solution is BASED. I can see there's a bed in there ( home when retired?) and there is "as" (when?) but I just cannot piece it together in any meaningful way.

Man washed up - after giving off of course. (6)

Well the man washed up appears to be CRUSOE, which is an anagram of course, but I don't see the relevance of "after giving off of". Any suggestions?

Hi zinc,

The BASED clue is AS (= “when”) in BED, where “in bed” = “retired”.

In the CRUSOE clue, “giving off” is the (rather weak, I think) anagram indicator.
