12a. First half of the rabble is groovy!

I think the answer is "raggle" which is a groove. Could someone explain the rest of the clue?

A rabble is a raggle-taggle, so 'first half' of that.

I can’t see how 28ac works. The plural of radio is radios according to Chambers and there seems to be an extra O in the wordplay. Does so = O?

I think it's an anagram (in trouble) of 'rides' +O, round +A, Austria, Radioes, contacts over the airwaves.

Thanks but still not happy about radioes as the answer!

Unclued, it's a pity you're not happy, but it works with the clue and seems to be a valid word. I had a quick check and it's fine by various dictionaries!

@Unclued/Malone

I think your comments raise an interesting point of discussion and I'm sure it has been visited before on this site - only I am too tired to do a substantial search!

That is the hegemony of Chambers in the crossword domain. Already an issue amongst non-Brit solvers (here, passim) where BRB isn't the prevailing source.

It seems to me that for many cluers it is rather like virginity, there is no grey area, you are Chambers or not...

...but, to spike this argument, I note that Azed rather elegantly 'recommends' Chambers without being slavish to it, which occasionally raises some interesting debate here.

Twice in the last year I have written to Chambers to ask that words used by Azed be added to their next edition, and their replies have been positive.
