I cannot bring to mind a satisfactory answer to 27 Down in Times 24624. I seem to need a word (only three letters )beginning with m and ending with t. Meaning Jest or Queen's consort

The answer is TOM. Mot is the jest, the queen is a female cat and a tomcat is her escort.

I an very grateful for that answer. Now somewhat embarrassed by my inability to solve this short-word clue. Usually exercise my mind with The Listener on Saturdays and Mephisto on Sundays but today's 24624 foxed me.

Reading blogs on the Times forum it seems that a lot of people didn't know that a female cat is a queen.
