Can anyone explain how 17 across works?

I think the answer to 17 across in today's Araucaria (Guardian) is marcher, but I don't see how it relates to the clue

Ah,sorry! The clue is One demonstrating to get number on sign in English. I understand the marcher is one demonstrating, but what about the rest?

M = number (1000)
Archer = Sagittarius

I`m not sure about this, but M is number (a thousand) and the sign is a V-sign made by English archers to the French to indicate that their bowstring fingers were still intact.

Sagittarius is name of sign of the Zodiac. Translated into English it means archer.
