37. Apple: scientist gets one for nothing (6) : B???I?
38. Cook priest a gruesome thin broth (10, two words) : ?O?P?E????
DOWN: 8. Permanent impression nurse made on most of school (8)

26. Acquire property as cut up for ploughing (7) : US??APT

14 lookes like OMEGA (O MEGA), but I don't see how 800 fits in.

26a USUCAPT - Anag. "as cut up"

8d ENGRAMMA - E(nrolled) N(urse) + GRAMMA(r)

the greek letter omega is an old symbol/numeral for 800

37 boffin change the o(nothing) for i (one) to give biffin ..an apple

I've scoured Google and Omega was indeed the symbol for 800.

Lecrack, I think you need a copy of Anne Bradford. She is wonderful, and would help you with most of these answers, (along with Chambers Word Wizard).
