read the clue the weekend gave up on the crossword but this clue bugs me, think there were 7 or 8 letters any help appreciated.

is this cryptic?

only thing i can think of is venting (or pleating).
what crossword was it? there may be an online version to get some letters.

Could the answer be EPISODE.
As in splitting the material of a play on TV or radio into parts.
Probably way off beam here.

I think episode would be a sort of cryptic answer?

It would be of great help if the name of the crossword could be given,so that you could gauge the level it is pitched at.

Sue, there are lots of people here who want to try to help you, but you've got to help us with some information -- what was the crossword, was 'splits in material' the whole clue, do you remember any letters you might have already had?

Best I can come up with is 'separates' (9 letters though and arguably cryptic).
