Today's Telegraph cryptic - can somebody please explain the connection between "Mitchell" and major as in "Majorcan" - 18 down?

Hi Jean,

Go to Big Dave's Crossword Blog and you'll find that there has been some discussion about this clue. Incidentally, the can part of your answer is a synonym for may and not tin but I appreciate that Helena was referring to another post.
