22ac: Muslims in North America backing holy man.

Answer is Sunnis. Why? I know that they are Muslims and I can see that SU could be U.S. reversed - but I cannot understand the wordplay..

Maybe SUNNIS in reverse = SINNUS = S = saint + IN + N(orth) US.

Not sure though if that is it.

S (for saint?) + IN + N (northern) + US (America) all backwards.

Not one of the best clues.

Thank you all for that.
I was expecting St for the holy man...but I know that I have seen just "S", too - and I had not understood that the "North" also represented another individual element in the answer.
Well done Arachne (the Setter) and thanks again to you three.

Oh, that's interesting. Thanks for that. I do The Times crossword from time to time and while I can usually get the answers if I stick at it, half the time I still cannot get the construction and deconstruction of the clues!
